What happened:
In Europe, Morrissey switches labels within EMI from HMV to Parlophone. The first album for the label, Vauxhall And I (1994) becomes his second no. 1 solo album in the UK, the leading single The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get gives him a Top 10 position and his biggest hit in the UK since 1988. In the following year his contract in Europe runs out and after a final single and compilation for EMI he signs a one-record deal with BMG Records which reactivate the RCA Victor label for him. The record Southpaw Grammar (still on Warners label Reprise in the US) divides the fans and is no big commercial success,too. In 1997, he releases Maladjusted after signing a new worldwide deal with PolyGram, though their labels Island (UK) and Mercury (RoW). For the artist as well as for the record company the alarming low sales of this album come as a total surprise. Morrissey is dropped by the label, when it becomes part of the Universal group after another merger. For the next years, good value compilations from his former recording companies are the only releases: Suedehead - The Best Of Morrissey (1997, EMI), My Early Burglary Years (1998, Reprise), The CD Singles 88-91 (2000, EMI), The CD Singles 91-95 (2001, EMI) and The Best of Morrissey (2001, Rhino).
