| Bona Drag 20th Anniversary Edition to be released (27th September, EU) | |
| 16th July 2010 | |
So that's what the Morrissey spotting at EMI was supposed to all about: Bona Drag will get a remastered re-release with bonus tracks (nice, though already known by the collectors apart fromn the long version of Let The Right One Slip In), Exiting to hear that more Morrissey news are yet to come. Exhuming an(other) old label just for a re-release seems to be not efficient so it's not all wrong to hope for a return to EMI for new material... The news in full from true-to-you: "To celebrate its 20th Anniversary, on 27th September, EMI will release through the resurrected 1960s Major Minor label, with Morrissey's full cooperation, a remastered Special Edition of Bona Drag. Originally released to much acclaim in October 1990, Bona Drag perfectly captures Morrissey's effortless transition in becoming a solo artist. It brings together his exceptional first seven singles, four of which went Top 10: his triumphant Top 5 debut, "Suedehead"; the anthemic, apocalyptic lament to wet seaside towns, "Everyday Is Like Sunday"; "The Last Of The Famous International Playboys"; and "Interesting Drug". The Top 20s "Ouija Board, Ouija Board", "November Spawned A Monster", and "Piccadilly Palare" and a selection of high quality b-sides from the singles complete the album. The compilation has now been remastered and overseen by Morrissey, and is updated with the addition of six previously unreleased and much coveted songs from the era: "Happy Lovers At Last United" (Outtake from "Sunday" sessions) Directing the artwork for the reissue, Morrissey has chosen to return the cover art - taken from the "November" video - back to its natural colour, so his shirt is black. In addition, he has also decided to update the back and inner artwork with a selection of favourite, hand-picked and rarely-seen photos. The LP version will be a double heavyweight 180g vinyl, housed in a wide-spine sleeve with a pull-out poster. The CD will be housed in a gatefold, card sleeve with an eight-page booklet, which will contain the aforementioned photos. Major Minor Records was started by Radio Caroline manager Phil Solomon. Its truly eclectic roster of artists and singles releases makes it a perfect home for Morrissey. [...] This will be the first release on the label since 1970. There will be more Morrissey news to come in the next month."

| Morrissey spotted at EMI | |
| 27th June 2010 | |
| Morrissey has been spotted visiting EMI on the 24th June - as he is not touring nor releasing records this year and without known record contract such a small note becomes the base for big rumours. In 1986 The Smiths signed a recording contract with EMI but broke up before recording a single note for them. Morrissey took over the contract and recorded for the HMV and Parlophone imprints between 1988 and 1995. After that EMI released a final single with songs from the vault (Sunny, 1995) and various, mostly good compilations. The last releases were two vinyl 7" boxes in late 2009 with replicas of every single recorded for EMI). If the visit is for further re-releases or anything elso or nothing - we'll see! | |

| Morrissey interviews Linder Sterling for the German edition of Rolling Stone Magazine (July) | |
| 24th June 2010 | |
| It states: "Der streitbare Popstar und die Provokationskünstlerin sind schon lange befreundet, doch erstmals seit 1979 interviewte Morrissey nun die von ihm verehrte Linder Sterling: ein Dialog über Maßlosingkeit, Musen und die Notwendigkeit von Idiotie" Morrissey is asking Linder about being an artist, her art, music, criticism, influences and sexuality (Best question in this content: "are tits a torture?"). She return the obvious adornment by Morrissey by quoting his lyrics twice (lines from Stretch Out And Wait and Now My Heart Is Full to be precise) The mag hits the shops in Germany today. | |

| Quarry and Ringleader released as 2-CD compliation (1st June, EU) | |
| 10th June 2010 | |
| The 2-CD comes in a fold out paper sleeve and contains the normal copies of the two studio albums with unchanged layout and cat.-nos, as released in 2004 and 2006. Only remarkable thing for collectors: for the cover, the 'light version' of Quarry (without the Tommy Gun) used in 2004 for the US-release was chosen. The release can be bought for 10-12 € at various online shops. | |

| 7" Vinyl Boxes released in UK and D | |
| 5th December 2009 | |
| The CD single counterparts had already been issued in 2000 and 2001; a 3-CD box containing all the songs from this 19 singles included just hit the shops a few weeks ago. First information given was that the covers of the boxes were all like its 2000/2001 counterparts, just in different colours. Actually, they changed it, replacing the image with relativly unknown pictures of (young) Morrissey. The 7" are all 1:1 replicas to the original UK issues - apart from the fact, that all are now 'Made in the EU'. | |

| Top 50 Morrissey rarities in current issue of Record Collector | |
| 23rd November 2009 | |
Announced and awaited by the fans for a long time, British collectors mag Record Collector finally issued a Morrissey Top 50 rarities list. The Xmas issue No. 370 is on sale since 19th November and can be ordered worldwide through their website, too.The list was compiled by longtime fan Travis Gravell, with a little help from fellow collectors, also including this very site. He states: "Just a quick note to let everyone know that the special Christmas edition of Record Collector magazine is now out with Morrissey on the cover. I am very pleased with the comments the article has received from the major Morrissey websites and blogs. I am getting a lot of questions about reference Cd's and why were they left off the list. These particular disc are in such low numbers that I felt the list could not be as accessible with these included. For people who are trying to collect all 50 items it would be unfair to put something like "November the 2" for which only one exist. As a reference point, most of the top collectors have around 10-15 items on the list. If you have more than 15 than you are doing an amazing job. Happy hunting everyone and thanks to Stefan for this wonderful website that helps keep everyone informed about the latest collectibles! Please visit http://www.recordcollectormag.com/ to order the magazine. For US residence you can also pick up a copy at your local Borders bookstore or local indie record store." I see that do have 19 of the TOP 50 rarities, but including nos.1 & 2... so collecting does not ever end, even in my case as I do collect since the very beginning of the solo career in 1988. Don't want to spoil the party, but the longtime collectors Holy Grail, the That's Entertainment dutch promo CD is only # 2 in the list...

| Bootleg LP Revelation includes two unknown recordings | ||
| 12th November 2009 | ||
There's a new bootleg LP on sale (e.g. eBay) called Revelation. The 9-track vinyl is a collection of unreleased Morrissey tracks, most of them have been unofficially available in the Internet for a long time. But two tracks on this LP, from which the community knew that they exist, hadn't leaked so far. The Morrissey / Street compositions Lifeguard on Duty and Happy Lovers United from the Viva Hate / Bona Drag era. Someone who actually listened to the songs describes them as follows: "I think they're among the best unreleased songs now that "Honey You Know Where To Find Me" and "You Should Have Been Nice To Me" have been released. Both are mid-tempo songs. I particularly love "Lifeguard On Duty", it has a Smiths feel to it and a great sing-along chorus. As for "Happy Lovers United", when Morrissey sings "Cause she is so kind and he is so clever" it reminds me of another song, I think "Ouija Board..." when Morrissey sings "she has now gone from this unhappy planet". An offer at eBay states: Morrissey - Revelation 180g LP A Superb release of 9 unreleased songs from Morrissey's Viva Hate, Kill Uncle and Your Arsenal recordings. One listen to these songs and you are taken back in time to the last recordings of the Smiths which begs the question why weren't these songs on any albums. This is a collectors gem. This is a like the lost album. Side A Side B Lyrics for the two songs mentioned can be found at passionsjustlikemine.com, too. UPDATE 23rd November: The tracks are now available in the net!

| Swords enters the UK album charts at # 55 | |
| 3rd November 2009 | |
The new B-Side Compilation Swords has entered the UK album charts today at # 55.Despite the growing insignificance of charts generally, its just in the same league as the re-issue of Southpaw Grammar a few months ago. Without any new tunes or supporting singles (rarest track: My Dearest Love was previously only available on vinyl) it mirrors the expectations of this release. Bona Drag (1990) had an otherwise unavailable edit of Will Never Marry included and was support by the single Piccadilly Palare; the otherwise neglectable World Of Morrissey (1995) was coupled with the Boxers single and even My Early Burglary Years (1998) featured an unknown 'in-store performance' of Cosmic Dancer.

| Something Is Squeezing My Skull (Mexican Institute of Sound vs NSM PSM Mix) | |
| 16th October 2009 | |
After Suedehead (Sparks Remix) from 2005 and this year's When I Last Spoke To Carol (Toy Selectah Remix) another Morrissey track has been remixed. This time it's a weird mexican-style Remix called Something Is Squeezing My Skull (Mexican Institute of Sound vs NSM PSM Mix). In opposite to the Suedehead Remix (officially blessed by Morrissey) and the Carol Remix (offered for free by Morrissey's record company Universal in June) it's doubtful if this remix of Skull is an official one. Morrissey had always been not found of remixes from the very beginning of his career; not only proved by his anger because of the This Charming Man New York Remixes from 1983 which were done by Rough Trade without his permission.

| The 7" Singles Vinyl Box postponed? | |
| 16th October 2009 | |
Initially scheduled for an 12th October UK release, The 7" Singles '88 - '91, the first of the two re-issued vinyl single boxes has not been released by EMI yet.Whereas the British online store recordstore.co.uk now states a release date 2nd November, 2009 claiming that both boxes (the second volume being called The HMV / Parlophone 7" Singles '91 - '95) will now be released on the same day, the German online store jpc.de now claims a release date 29th January 2010! As this release isn't important for fans and against Morrissey's wishes we'll see if this release will ever see the light of day or will go the same way as e.g. Morrissey At the Hollywood Bowl (2008, Warner, Live DVD), South With Morrissey (Documentation DVD), The Very Best Album Ever (2001, EMI, Dutch CD compilation series) or Suedehead - The Best Of Morrissey (1997, EMI, 2-CD Edition) which were withdrawn although cat.-nos. and release dates had already been published.

| 16th October 2009 | |
I haven't seen a copy yet but it's said that on the recently spotted promos of the B-Side compilation Swords - as well as in the downloadable bundle - there are two 'hidden tracks' not mentioned on the sleeve: Morrissey's 2006 cover version of The New York Dolls' Human Being as well as an edited version of The Slum Mums. It's unlikely that the official release will be extended, too. The promo itself is said to be a 2-CD-R in a PVC-wallet, cat.-no. etc. are unknown; a copy offered on eBay last week has been removed due to eBay policies.

This time it's a 3-CD box; similar releases of two 7" vinyl boxes will follow on 12th October and 2nd November (sic!) in the UK. Morrissey asked fans not to buy these compilations, as he will not get any royalties from it. | Im Gespräch mit Morrissey - German edition of Len Browns book (14th October, GER)

Len Browns book Meetings with Morrissey from last year will be released in a German translation next week. Im Gespräch mit Morrissey will hit the shops on 14th October, though inside it book it stated that the first german release will be 2010... It's published by the Hannibal Verlag. It contains 400 pages and the hardcover costs € 24,80. A preview of the German edition van be found here. Translations of music-related biographies or similar books into german are rare. To my knowledge it's just the forth german book on Morrissey and The Smiths for the last 20 years after Mick Middles: The Smiths - Die authentische Biographie (Sonnentanz Verlag, 1989), The Smiths - Fotografien von Kevin Cummins (Soundtrack, 2002) and Simon Goddard: Songs That Saved Your Life (Heel, 2007). It's also the last of many 2009 book releases, a (hopefully) comprehensive list of all books that have The Smiths, Morrissey or Johnny Marr as the subject can be found here.

| Another re-release of Morrissey's EMI singles on 3-CD Box (UK, 12th October 2009 ) | ||||
| 15th August 2009 | ||||
| "For the first time ever, all of Morrissey’s singles - including all b-sides - from his seven-year tenure on HMV/Parlophone Records will be released on a 3-CD set. Beginning with ‘Suedehead’, HMV/Parlophone Singles ’88 – ’95 runs chronologically and consists of 19 incredible singles - 10 of which were non-album releases - b/w not just brilliant b-sides, but some of Moz’s most-loved songs ever. As well as his first two singles, it also includes the highly acclaimed ‘The Last Of The Famous…’, ‘November Spawned A Monster’, ‘Piccadilly Palare’ and ‘Pregnant For The Last Time’, the first single to feature his ongoing collaborator and musical director Boz Boorer who, along with guitarist Alain Whyte, added an American Rockabilly sound to Moz’s distinctive jangle pop. After the success of these singles, Morrissey recorded an album – 1992’s Your Arsenal - with one of his heroes, Mick Ronson, former David Bowie collaborator and member of The Spiders From Mars. The three singles from this album – ‘We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful’, ‘You’re The One For Me, Fatty’ and ‘Certain People I Know’ – are all included. This was followed by what’s considered by many his greatest album - and final for Parlophone - Vauxhall and I, with singles ’The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get’ and ‘Hold On To Your Friends’. Also included is the 1994 duet with Siouxsie Sioux, ‘Interlude’, and non-album singles ’Boxers’ and ’Sunny’, which indicated the direction Morrissey would take on his next album, Southpaw Grammar. All the b-sides released in this seven-year period are included: 35 studio recordings and seven live recordings. They include the fan-favourite ‘Sister I’m A Poet’; the self-deprecating ‘Disappointed’; Moz’s witty jibe at The Rolling Stones, ‘Get Off The Stage’; his tribute to The Jam in his reworking of ‘That’s Entertainment’; an exquisite cover of indie-skinhead band Bradford’s ‘Skin Storm’; the gorgeous ‘Used To Be A Sweet Boy’; Moz’s exploration of London’s underbelly, ‘Have-A-Go Merchant’ and ‘Black-Eyed Susan’; an affecting version of ‘Moonriver’, and many, many more. There are live versions of The Smiths’ ‘Sweet And Tender Hooligan’ (recorded at Morrissey’s first-ever solo concert), T-Rex’s ‘Cosmic Dancer’, and Viva Hate’s ‘Alsatian Cousin’, amongst others. HMV/Parlophone Singles ’88 – ’95 will be released on 12th October. In addition to this release, on the same day a limited-edition box set of Morrissey’s 7” singles – The 7” Singles ’88 – ’91 – will be released. The boxset is housed in lift-off-lid box, with a cover-image taken from a photograph by Anton Corbijn. The singles’ artwork, all of which were originally conceived and controlled by Morrissey himself, will be faithfully reproduced for each sleeve and the singles themselves will be on heavyweight vinyl for improved sound quality. A second box set, The HMV/Parlophone Singles ’91 – ’95, will be released on 2nd November."

| Morrissey asks fans not to buy re-released vinyl singles | |
| 8th August 2009 | |
| Statement from Morrissey on true-to-you.net: Morrissey would like it to be known that he has not been consulted by EMI/HMV/Parlophone with regards to two forthcoming boxed sets of Morrissey singles. Morrissey does not approve such releases and would ask people not to bother buying them. Morrissey receives no royalty payments from EMI for any back catalogue, and has not received a royalty from EMI since 1992. Morrissey also does not approve of, and was not consulted on, the Rhino box of Smiths CDs, or the Warner releases of Smiths LPs on 180 gramme vinyl. Morrissey last received a royalty payment from Warners ten years ago, and, once again, he would ask people not to bother buying the reissued LPs or CDs. | |

This will be a Polydor release. Thanks to everyone who bought 'Years of Refusal'. We were the number one seller in the UK for the week of release, but, as with 'You Are The Quarry' and 'Your Arsenal', we were booted off the number one spot on the last hour of the final day. We cried. [...] Absolutely yours, If we don't count the various live B-Sides he released since 2004, the 18 tracks in question are out of 26. Most of the Quarry B-Sides have already been re-released on the Deluxe Edition in the UK and US, so I hope they won't be included again.

The 100 page book contains reports of 30 meetings between Morrissey and his fans - written from their perspective. From thedayimetmorrissey.com, where you can order the book directly: They look like him, they speak like him. They worship the very ground he walks on. And when obsessive fan actually meets Morrissey, worlds turn upside down. The Day I Met Morrissey contains real-life accounts from fans who for a split second found themselves in the right place at the right time. There’s a chance encounter at Wilmslow train station in 1985 when a tongue-tied teen fulfils her dream. More dramatic Morrissey meetings come in perfumeries, airport lounges and by the Pic’n’Mix at Woolworths. Meanwhile, it seems that the long-awaited and often postponed book Morrissey: The Pageant Of His Bleeding Heart by Gavin Hopps will finally see the light of day soon. Though amazon.de still states a 31st August 2009 release date, a new press release states that it will be released in the US within June and in the UK within July. Definitely out: a second, revised and expanded edition of Phil Gatenby's great guide Morrissey's Manchester.

| 31st May 2009 | |
An previously unreleased alternate version of one of the least 'loved' Morrissey tracks, Sweetie Pie (Morrissey / Farrell), the formerly B-Side to his final ROTT-single I Just Want To See The Boy Happy, has been played by keyboarder and co-author Mikey Farrell played during his interview on US indie radio station Indie 103.1 a fortnight ago.Sweetie-Pie is one of the more experimental tracks just like Black-Eyed Susan from 1994 (finally released as a B-Side of the last Parlophone single Sunny in November 1995). | Something Is Squeezing My Skull enters the UK charts at #46 / Reissued Southpaw Grammar reaches # 63
| 4th May 2009 | |
The latest single lifted from Years Of Refusal, Something Is Squeezing My Skull, failed to enter the Top 40 of the UK single charts yesterday by reaching just # 46.Just by the rank it's the second weakest position ever for a Morrissey single, only Hold On To Your Friends charted one rank lower back in 1994. Although the charts long lost their meaning they once had the reasons for this disappointing rank are discussed heavily; starting with the non-visible marketing for the release in the UK up to the question if Morrissey's songs are TOP 40 material at all. It seemed to me that it was easier this time to buy a Promo CD than to get a copy of the official release. The Legacy Edition of Southpaw Grammar also charted in the UK album charts at # 63. The first copies of Maladjusted - Expanded Edition have now been spotted, too. It's released on the Polydor label (not Island as previously assumed) and have the same look as the new edition of Southpaw Grammar. In opposite to the later, Maladjusted is just released in a Ecolbook package version and hasn't charted yet.

| News on Maladjusted reissue (UK, 4th May 2009) | |
| 5th March 2009 | |
| News on the previously announced re-issue of Maladjusted, taken from a press release of a yet unknown PR-Company. If this becomes true, Maladjusted will get the same treatment as Southpaw Grammar (new sleeve, additional tracks and different running order) but there a big difference: the 'new' tracks are the six B-sides from the 1997 singles and two original tracks - Roy's Keen and Papa Jack - will not be on the reissue! The press release states: Morrissey Re-presents: ‘Southpaw Grammar’ (27th April) &‘Maladjusted’ (4th May) Morrissey will re-introduce his solo albums ‘Southpaw Grammar’ (Sony) and ‘Maladjusted’ (Universal) on 27th April and 4th May respectively. Featuring new sleeves, exclusive liner notes by the artist, previously unreleased tracks and rare photos, the albums contain some of Morrissey’s finest and most underrated material. Both releases benefit from the artist’s active involvement.
‘Southpaw Grammar’ Originally released in 1995, ‘Southpaw Grammar’ was Morrissey’s fifth solo album and featured the singles ‘Dagenham Dave’ and ‘Boy Racer’. Charting at No. 4 in the UK, the album marked a change in direction and is considered by many critics and fans as Morrissey’s most ambitious and exciting body of work. The artist has been very closely involved in the re-issue of ‘Southpaw Grammar’, re-sequencing the tracklisting and adding four previously unreleased songs. In addition, Morrissey has provided extensive, personally-written, liner notes and has even changed the album sleeve. ‘Southpaw Grammar’ was, previously, the only Morrissey album not to feature him on the cover. The album also boasts a redesign by Anthony Lui and unseen photography courtesy of Morrissey’s close friend, Linder Sterling. Tracklisting: * Previously unreleased tracks
‘Maladjusted’ Released in 1997, ‘Maladjusted’ was the follow up to ‘Southpaw Grammar’. Produced by Steve Lillywhite, the album features Morrissey’s most successful single in the decade between ‘Vauxhall and I’ (1994) and ‘You Are The Quarry’. ‘Alma Matters’ reached No.16 in the UK chart and was followed by the equally superb ‘Roy’s Keen’ and ‘Satan Rejected My Soul’. Well received by critics and fans alike, ‘Maladjusted’ merges Morrissey’s ballad craft with the glam-rock of his earlier work. As with ‘Southpaw Grammar’, Morrissey has been actively involved in re-issuing ‘Maladjusted’. The album includes a new sleeve, b-sides, extensive liner notes by the artist, rare images and a completely different track sequence. This version also contains the controversial ‘Sorrow Will Come In The End’, which was withdrawn from the original British release. The track features Morrissey intoning, rather than singing, over a backing of manic strings and the beat of a judge’s gavel – an obvious reference to The Smith’s bitter royalties dispute. Tracklisting: * B sides

| 12 page special on Morrissey and The Smiths in this month's Musikexpress | |
| 26h February 2009 | |
The March 2009 issue of the German music mag Musikexpress does contain a 12-page Dossier on behalf of Morrissey and The Smiths. Titled The ME-Dossier: Morrissey & The Smiths it divides the time from 1959 to 2009 in twelve tiny bits, adding to each 'chapter' a headline from one of his songs. The mag does also add a discography (the first one I'm aware of that claim that praises Southpaw Grammar a masterpiece...), an current interview, a short label history, an overview on his battles with the NME and finally gives Years Of Refusal 5 1/2 out of 6 stars, making it Record of the month.

| Southpaw Grammar re-release postponed again | |
| 26h February 2009 | |
The expanded and reworked UK edition of Southpaw Grammar has been postponed again. After being expected for mid-2008 a 2nd March, 2009 release date by BMG had been made public via true-to-you.net.Morrissey himself said at the recent BBC concert that it will be released "in the last week of April" and online stores take pre-orders now either for the 22nd April 2009 or the 27th April 2009. As this re-release seems to be secure, it seems to be unlikely now that the promised re-release of Maladjusted will happen in the near future as there has been no sign of it after it was announced in October 2008.

| I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris enters UK charts at # 21 | |
| 16th February 2009 | |
| The midweek rank in the UK was #18 so expectations weren't that high. Nevertheless it's the worst chart entry for the first single taken from an Morrissey album since 1995, when Dagenham Dave just reached # 26. What might have been a catastrophe in previous years won't be taken so serious anymore as the single charts, even in the UK, do not longer have the meaning they once had after downloads, radio plays and other factors do count as much as physical sales. | New German promo disc for I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris | |
| 14th February 2009 | |
After promo discs promoting the new single from Great Britain, the US and France have been found another promo CD with I'm Throwing my Arms Around Paris has been spotted. It seems to be from German origin as it bears the German release dates for the single and the album. The disc, which seems to be a CD-R, bears no visible cat.-no. and comes without a sleeve in a clear plastic wallet. Still no sign of a full album promo as it was common for all previous albums. Maybe the leakage of the full album to the net in early January is the reason, that no-one has got or spotted an official promo disc for Years Of Refusal so far.

| 2nd February 2009 | |
After seeing in several internet offers that Southpaw Grammar will be re-released in the US, too, by Rhino Flashback, i just got the information that the record will indeed be re-released soon. But the US will not adapt the changes on tracklist, sleeve and running order as made for the UK reissue by BMG and will just issue the 1995 version again without any changes. The original 1995 release was issued by Reprise (US, Part of Warner) and RCA Victor / BMG (Europe, now Sony BMG). It seems that Warner and Morrissey are still not on speaking terms after the announcement of the - now cancelled - Live At The Hollywood Bowl DVD which Morrissey asked his fans 'not to buy'. It seems that Warner finally gave up plans to release the live DVD Morrissey Live At The Hollywood Bowl. The initial announcement in August 2008 that Warner will issue a DVD with the full length 2007 concert for a release date in October 2008 was immediately followed by a message from Morrissey, claiming that the DVD was against his wishes and without his involvement and that he urges people not to buy it. The release date was pushed back to a possible release in March 2009, but now Recordstore.co.uk and HMV.com have marked this release as cancelled and did the same to pre-orders they had taken. | The Smiths Reader 1983 - 1987 pre-release as Book on Demand
| 5th January 2009 | |
| According to the author, the book won't be available in traditional book stores and online retailers until late February, but fans who want to order in advance can do so ordering it at Lulu.com and have their copy in just 5 to 8 days (which, btw, did work). The 212-page book compresses interviews by members of The Smiths from February 1983 to September 1987 which appeared before in fifteen different mags including Sounds, Melody Maker, Record Mirror, Smash Hits or Time Out. There is no interview from or for the NME included... Excerpt from the press text: In 2002, the NME declared The Smiths “the greatest artist of all time”. And it’s a notion that’s difficult to dispute. In just five short years, the Manchester foursome conquered the world, forever changing the scope of modern music. Along the way, the fame seemed to alter frontman Morrissey's opinion of print journalism, going from an absolute frenzy of press interviews in 1983 and 1984, easing up in 1985 and ultimately withdrawing, save for a few essential pieces in 1986 and 1987. As The Smiths’ frontman recoiled from the public eye, his songwriting accomplishments with guitar maestro Johnny Marr gave way to one brilliant song cycle after another. Inspired, influential and always prolific, Morrissey, Marr, bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce were like no other band, either before them or since the group’s unexpected implosion in August of 1987. | |
